About the project

Peace education encompasses the key concepts of education and peace. While it is possible to define education as a process of systematic institutionalized transmission of knowledge and skills, as well as of basic values and norms that are accepted in a certain society, the concept of peace is less clearly defined. Many writers make an important distinction between positive and negative peace. Negative peace is defined as the absence of large-scale physical violence–the absence of the condition of war. Positive peace involves the development of a society in which, except for the absence of direct violence, there is no structural violence or social injustice. Accordingly, peace education could be defined as an interdisciplinary area of education whose goal is institutionalized and noninstitutionalized teaching about peace and for peace. Objectives

Peace education encompasses the key concepts of education and peace. While it is possible to define education
as a process of systematic institutionalized transmission of knowledge and skills, as well as of basic values and
norms that are accepted in a certain society, the concept of peace is less clearly defined. Many writers make an
important distinction between positive and negative peace. Negative peace is defined as the absence of
large-scale physical violence–the absence of the condition of war. Positive peace involves the development of a
society in which, except for the absence of direct violence, there is no structural violence or social injustice.
Accordingly, peace education could be defined as an interdisciplinary area of education whose goal is
institutionalized and noninstitutionalized teaching about peace and for peace. Peace education aims to help
students acquire skills for nonviolent conflict resolution and to reinforce these skills for active and responsible
action in the society for the promotion of the values of peace. Therefore, unlike the concept of conflict resolution,
which can be considered to be retroactive–trying to solve a conflict after it has already occurred–peace education
has a more proactive approach. Its aim is to prevent a conflict in advance or rather to educate individuals and a
society for a peaceful existence on the basis of nonviolence, tolerance, equality, respect for differences, and
social justice.
The reason behind choosing the peace education as explained above is that the conflict prevention as well as
increasing the skills of youthworkers to reach out young people and provide educational activities became highly
relevant due to several reasons in post-pandemic era such as increased domestic violence, increased hate
speech online as well as the impact on the mental health of young people. To elaborate this information,
according to the Equinet European Network of Equality Bodies Report indicated that all over Europe, domestic
violence is rising. In France, during the first week of the lockdown, authorities reported a more than 30 per cent
rise in the country’s domestic violence cases. Femicides in lockdown have already been registered in several
countries, including in Spain where a woman was murdered on 19 March by her husband in front of their children.
Helplines calls in Cyprus have risen by 30%; while in Italy, they dropped drastically but many desperate texts and
emails have been sent. According to the research done concerning the young people’s mental health by
University of Surrey shows that there has been a rise in the number of young people experiencing problems with
their mental health, and it is concerning to find that this has been significantly exacerbated due to pandemic.
Supporting the mental health of young people and ensuring they can access the support they need is vital to
ensure their overall wellbeing. As social restrictions continue in response to the pandemic, it is crucial that we
take steps to protect their mental health. Directly, the mental health issue will lead to the issues concerning the
violence in long run and the peace education and non-violent communication is a huge necessity within the
European context. Above all, Turkey has been listed in Global Peace Index as 130th country among 160
countries in the world while it was 98 last year. Moreover, during the pandemic, the race-based violence is
increased more than ever specifically towards to the Asian population in Europe and the world due to origin of the
pandemic. In long run, to avoid the marginalization of young people and promoting the social peace is highly
important as the relevance of the peace education to prevent possible conflicts and promote non-violence,
tolerance, equality and respect among the young people.
The main need behind the implementation of the project is to promote the peace education among youth workers
and equip the youth workers to reach out young people through educational activities for post-pandemic era for
tackling with the social divide raised due to inequalities within time of the pandemic and preventing conflicts that
are highly visible in the society in current times. Thus, the project focuses on increasing the youth workers

Activities
Though the project activity is consisted of 6 full day programme, it will consist of preparation activities ( virtual
component ) and follow-up activities which are explained detailed under project design. Thus, only the activities
will take place within the residential activity is explained below in detailed.
1) Preperation activities before the mobility ( January 2021-April 2022): The preparation activity will take place for
4 weeks and the participants each will involve particular tasks concerning the task-related and practical
arrangements prior to the mobility. This will be implemented within in Moodle Platform and each week, the
participants will have 1 hour Zoom Meeting to discuss about their advancements within the project.
2) Mobility Activity ( 01-08 April 2022 )
The project activity will take place between 01-08 April 2022 ( 6 full-working days – 2 travel days ) in Alcala la
Real,Spain with the participating organisations from Spain, Iceland, France, Hungary, Romania,Slovenia, Italy,
Serbia, Portugal, Turkey with 23 participants. We planned to include 2 participant per country and we planned to
include 11 young people with fewer opportunities as agencies of the target groups of the participating
organizations to increase the efficiency of the training course.
3)Follow-Up Activities ( April. 2022 – September 2022 ): After the training course is implemented and the
participants learn on training development an peace education, they will work on the trainings, workshops and
new project ideas with the involvement of trainers as mentors. We foresee that the project activities that are going
to developed by participants will focus on Erasmus+ but we expect that the participants will develop new activities
solely for their organisational usage.The implementation of those activities will be implemented by participants
with our support in contextual ways and the sending organizations in practical ways.
The youth workers profile :
– Willing to implement activities in the field of Peace Education
– 18+ years old
– Working voluntarily or professionally in youth organisation
– Willing to involve in intercultural learning process
– Believes that they can work in intercultural trainer team
– Be able to communicate in English
– Has little or no knowledge on Peace Education
– Have previous experience with youth programs
– Have involved in international, national or local education activities as participant
– Have an idea to implement in the field of peace education specifically focusing intercultural learning, intercultural

Impact
Our project will contribute to the development of youth work in the aspect of peace education. As the project is
focused on increasing the capacity of the youth organisations as well as the youth workers working in the field of
peace education specifically focused on the young people with fewer opportunities. Due to this reason, we expect
to contribute to the development of the youth work. by qualifying youth workers to reach out to the young people
under risk of marginalization and radicalization such as young people with economic obstacles, social obstacles
and cultural differences. On the other hand, we internalise the aspect that the young people with fewer
opportunities should have a voice and should be work with rather than should be worked for. Therefore, we will
include one young people with fewer opportunity from each country to increase their involvement in youth
projects. With that way, the project will contribute to the development of youth work in general.
Our participants will be able to reach local youth by using local trainings to enable them to make use of practices
such as intercultural dialogue, conflict resolution and non-violent communication in their daily lives. In addition,
since our participants will have the competencies to propose solutions to social problems and take action by
using nonviolent action method for these social problems, they will create awareness both in their organisations
and in their local areas.
In addition, by informing the visual and written media in Ankara, we will share the information of our project and
provide information about the realization of such a project in Ankara and discuss the issue of peace. Since our
participants will want to organize international activities while working with their institutions after they return to
their home countries, the visibility of nonviolent communication will increase and impact will be created in this field
as a result of the international activities they will organize. These activities will ensure that the impact planned is
reached in local, regional, national and European level.
In addition to this, we will present a basic knowledge to the local, regional, national and international
organizations wishing to work in this field with the Peace Education – Trainer Booklet. That is explained under
dissemination section in detailed although, the content of the book will consists of our experiences and
experiences of the participants. On the other hand, as we will disseminate this booklet in the platforms which will
ensure the impact on European level that the activities that we have implemented will inspire the youth
organisations to implement activities in the field of peace education.
The participants of the training as the direct beneficiaries are expected to multiply the training outcomes by
implementing own projects on the topic at local or/ and international level within or outside the Erasmus+.
Consequently, an impact beyond the direct beneficiaries is expected to result mainly from the participants and
their sending organisations acting as multipliers and the follow-up activities.
The expected impact on others (indirect beneficiaries) will be:
– On the partner organisations of the training through the achieved knowledge and learned tools of their
representatives in the project, which can be transferred to other members in the organisations by implementing
training activities or meetings internally
– On young people and communities in which the partner organisations work by organising improved activities on
peace education
– On young people and communities in which the partner organisations work by implementing the planned
follow-up projects
