Objectives

But all of this waste can be reused through DIY workshops. In rural areas, resources are scarce and promoting
DIY experiences among young people promotes the advantage over harmful resources. With just a little
imagination and maybe a coat of paint or some new hardware, an old cabinet, table or chair can be given new life
as something fresh and unique. Upcycling is the act of taking something that is no longer used and giving it a
second life and a new function. In doing so, the end product often becomes more practical, valuable and beautiful
than it was previously. By increasing the recycling skills of young people, we will introduce the idea of ​recycling to
the next generations.
Throwing away the trash and buying a new one is the easiest part we have in our consumer culture. However,
upcycling is the new way to reduce waste and develop new products that can be used in the future. During this
project, we will work on the ground with participants to include the local community in the process and raise
awareness about consumer culture and upcycling. The idea for the project stems from previous initiatives of our
organization as well as the proven impact that DIY workshops can create on the waste landscape of local
communities. Our main goal is to engage young people with the idea of ​transforming old materials to give them
new uses.
By implementing this project, we aim to raise awareness among young people about resource challenges in rural
areas through the interaction of young people with the local community of Alcalá la Real, and at the same time
increase their skills and attitudes towards recycling materials that are considered waste. The idea is that
participants will collect trash from the local community house by house and the collected trash will be recycled
with the help of our facilitators and the work of participants will be promoted in the main park, which is the most
frequented place in the city. In addition to that, we will implement with participants a “DIY Day” with the
participation of the local population in the common area to raise local awareness and contribute to the
development of skills not only of young people but of the community in general, to reduce consumption.
With the project we will cover four different topics: climate change, excessive consumption, recycling, rural
development and creativity. As we cover these topics, we will use DIY as a tool to foster creativity and make
people think outside the box to promote environmental awareness and waste management issues. The project
will support the European Green Deal by emphasizing the 3Rs (Reuse, Reduce and Recycle). In addition to that,
the developed materials will be donated to the local population so that the impact is tangible and continuous in
the life of the local community, promoting their solidarity and commitment.

Activities
The project activity will take place between June 08 and June 16, 2025 with 33 participants (4 participants + 1
leader) from 6 different countries (Spain, Austria, Germany, Croatia, Netherlands, Hungary) and the Spanish
group will be 8 people (2 facilitators, 1 group leader and 5 participants) in Alcalá la Real as a Youth Exchange.
The reason why the Spanish group will be bigger is due to the operational reason to be able to implement the
youth exchange in a timely and efficient manner, as the activity consists of large local actions, such as
participating in face-to-face activities in Spanish people’s homes and implementing a DIY workshop with the local
population.
The methodology of the activities will be based on non-formal education methods, emphasizing self-directed
learning among participants, encouraging the peer-to-peer learning process. Facilitators will provide technical and
logistical support to both participants and leaders. The methods implemented will include open space activities,
group work, research and practical experience in developing new products.
The objectives of the activity are as follows:
1. To increase young people’s green skills, focusing on recycling materials and promoting the understanding of
DIY and recycling to address climate change issues.
2. To share young people’s practices related to climate issues, green skills and creativity through DIY activities.
3. To raise participants’ awareness about using waste to create new materials and tools that contribute to the fight
against climate change and overconsumption.
4. To raise awareness among participants about the problems of climate change in Europe and overconsumption.
5. To develop participants’ skills in the field of upcycling and boost their creativity through product development in
DIY workshops.

The project plans to raise awareness among young people about recycling materials from waste, giving them
practical experience. Through direct participation, participants will reflect on the problems encountered during the
preparation and implementation phases of the activity. This process improves their awareness about reusing
materials in the fight against climate change, thus increasing their participation and motivation to create new
activities and promote the reuse of materials. The implementation of DIY workshops will also foster creativity
among young people and raise awareness about the role of creativity in promoting action against climate change.

more prevalent in our communities. The project will have a tremendous impact on the youth as they will be able to
use the waste they produce, from electronic devices to old furniture that is considered trash, to create new
products. The project will give them a reason to use the old and unused materials and develop new materials with
DIY workshops. In that way, the project will increase their skills and awareness and make them stop consuming
before creating new products in their home, their daily life and their communities after the youth exchange.
The activities planned within the project will have a direct impact on the youth by increasing their awareness
about recycling practices of trash and unused materials. In addition to that, they will become more aware about
the recycling aspect of waste. Also, as a follow-up measure, we plan to implement DIY workshops in each
country upon their return. During the project, participants will gain skills to be able to implement these activities
and the project will provide them with the knowledge about upcycling and reducing the impact of their
consumption in a practical and theoretical way through the workshops. The DIY workshops that participants will
implement will create an impact after the youth participation in the local communities of the participants.
Participants will develop new projects and activities to be implemented later in their countries within the
framework of Erasmus+ and the European Solidarity Corps during the project. We will provide participants with
information about the Erasmus+ Programme and the European Solidarity Corps programmes so that they can
implement new projects. Furthermore, we will provide them with information on how to develop Erasmus+ and
ESC Solidarity projects so that they can develop new project ideas using the knowledge they have acquired
within the project. In addition to that, participants will acquire both new skills in developing and manufacturing
materials and creative skills due to the involvement of young people from different countries. This process will
foster the creativity of the young participants, while raising their awareness of intercultural dialogue and
increasing their intercultural awareness.
During the project activity, participants will visit house to house in Alcalá la Real and distribute leaflets made from
the recyclable material defined in the project regarding the DIY and waste reuse aspect. In this way, they will
interact with the local community and the other young people at the same time. Participants will collect the
materials during this door-to-door awareness campaign and it will help them gather the necessary materials to
implement DIY workshops to try them themselves with the help of the facilitators. The awareness campaign will
help participants understand the Spanish way of life and this process will involve the local community and the
attitudes of the participants towards the Spanish people will increase positively. In addition, the young people of
Alcalá la Real will directly benefit from the activity as they will interact with their peers from different countries by
doing the door-to-door awareness activity.
On the last day of the project, participants will implement an outdoor DIY workshop with the local community at
Paseo de Los Álamos where young people, the elderly and children will meet and participate. During the garbage
collection process, while distributing leaflets made from the recyclable material, they will invite the local
population to the workshop that will be implemented outdoors. With this activity, the youth will learn and
experience how to make a DIY workshop with the local people and develop knowledge to implement these
activities in their countries upon their return. In that way, the project will create a lasting impact. In addition, the
participants will have the opportunity to develop their skills from waste reduction, recycling and craftsmanship
while learning about climate change issues. The project will help them use upcycling to engage youth, children
and community members to raise their awareness about environmental issues and the activities will boost their
creativity. In addition, as the activities will be conducted in English, the participants will increase their skills to
express themselves in English and learn new words and terminologies related to green skills.
